Deep Hole Drilling With High Power QCW Fiber Laser

Shown below is a picture of a 20 mm (0.79 inch) long, 0.6 mm (0.024 inch) diameter hole in AMS 5706 (Waspalloy®). The hole is trepanned using a 20 kW QCW fiber laser in 10 mm (0.4 inch) thick material at an angle of 30 degrees from the surface. Metallographic analysis showed maximum recast at 47 µm with minimal spatter on both the entry and exit.
